BURIYANI, BATIK & BAILA - Sri Lankan Festival 26th & 27th Feb - 6 to 10pm |

| Ayubowan, Vanakkam.... welcome to a taste of Sri Lanka. The Wizard of Oz Funland hosts a weekend (Fri 26th & Sat 27th Feb) that promises to bring the food, music and culture of the island country to its popular weekend buffet. Put on your best batik shirt, dance the baila between mouthfuls of tasty buriyani and if you’re brave enough, grab the mic at karaoke and do some good old Sinhala & Tamil movie hits! “This year, we’ve decided to dedicate regular weekends to theme ‘We are One, though we are many’ and share in the cultures of the different communities who make up the rich social fabric of Macarthur”, said Christerine Laul, programme manager. “The idea is to encourage people from various communities living locally to come forward and share their culture with the rest of us. Not only will this give us a greater understanding and appreciation of our immediate neighbours but a great opportunity to try out some absolutely fascinating food and culture as a family at an affordable price!” ![]() So thanks to lots of initiative from the Fernandos from Eaglevale, Rajkumars of Woodbine and a large local Sri Lankan community, those visiting the Funland are in for a treat from this land of tea. Ladies can have fun trying on a saree (traditional 6 metre long wrap) while the guys can join into the baila (traditional merry making dance) before listening to some folk yarns over a good Sri Lankan cuppa. The Funland’s Sri Lankan Festival will also showcase exhibits from master craftsman Ananda Fernando’s collection. Fernando, who has recently won the Fishers Ghost Traditional Art Award will share rare and unique artifacts from his interesting exhibition that travels down 2550 years of the island’s artistic tradition. This includes a 200 year old Yakka mask – a colourful tribute to the many legendary devils who happily co-inhabit the island. Meanwhile Omega Elegant Dining will ensure that everyone gets a good taste of a Sri Lankan staples, Buriyani and String Hoppers! Sri Lankan cultural items on stage, lots of giveaways and competitions all add to the evening’s fun. A big screen transports you into the frenzy of the Kandy Perahera with its colourfully dressed up elephants going in procession through the town! Local members of the Sri Lankan community complete the experience with a great big sing along & dance along – “just as we do back home”. On Friday, Mr. P.D. Fernando, Consul General for Sri Lanka, will light the lamp. The festival evenings go from 5 to 9pm on Fri 26th & Sat 27th Feb. Price of $22 per adult & $15 per child includes the buffet (BYO), entry to the Funland and use of all its facilities like Putt Putt Golf. Call 4626 7777, 4626 7766 to book your table. |
